丈
zhàng
measure of length, ten Chinese feet (3.3 m)
to measure; husband; polite appellation for an older male
one (一) + hand (又) = a measured span, a man of stature
The original sense was a hand stretched out to measure a length — one outstretched hand-span standardized into a unit of about ten feet. From 'measured length' it extended to mean a respected older man, as in 丈人, literally 'a man of full stature.'
